Bailey luvs his birthday

These photos are almost a month old now, but better late than never:

Bailey celebrates turning 1 year old with a nice spoonful of peanut butter. We approximated Bailey's birthday to be March 20 or 21. We figured we'd go with March 20 since it's usually the first day of spring/the Vernal Equinox. And Bailey loves equinoxes (because he loves everything).

Bailey is 10 days out from his second surgery here, so he enjoys his birthday peanut butter, along with a rawhide twist, while reclining in his bed.

The humans enjoyed strawberries, Cool Whip, and angel food cake.

@ 11 months: Bailey luvs cushy surfaces everywhere

Bailey believes in having a cushy backrest as well as a cushy seat. He will drag his cushion around and create these little lounge areas. We suspect he wants us to upholster the entire house.

Strange sleeping position #09: the mid-gallop

This is something new. Bailey has had only curled-up-on-the-one-side-that-doesn't-hurt sleeping positions for the last few months. We kind of wonder if he'll be able to do the flying squirrel after his hips heal.

@ 11 months: two bad things that don't go great together

This is how Bailey looked when he had to both wear the cone, and be confined to the crate:

But this looks more like how he felt (scary creepy eyes!):

Fortunately it didn't take long for Bailey to learn the lick stitches = get the cone connection and he didn't need to wear it outside of the first week.

@ 11 months: recovering after surgery #1

Bailey is back from surgery! He was recovering so well, or at least, he was moving around so much that he was released a day early. He was super hyper upon seeing us again; you really couldn't tell he had had major surgery two days before. The collar is a nice fashion statement, no?

I was requested to take a more dignified portrait of Bailey. You can see two of his three incisions here.

When someone licks his stitches too much, he gets the cone.
Someone hates the cone.

We thought Bailey might feel a little cold on his shaved side, but he doesn't seem to care for blankets or towels so much and prefers to chew on them instead.

Overall, Bailey seems to be feeling well, perhaps better than he really is. Sometimes we suspect he has a high pain threshold; it certainly goes up when he sees another dog and thinks he'll get to play. Sadly for Bailey, doctor's orders are no walking/horseplay for at least two weeks.

@ 10.5 months - Tilly's back!

[This is from two weekends ago.]

It's Tilly! Back for another weekend of dog-sitting. She's always on the go, and reminded us that our Bailey has pretty much zero economy of movement. While our guy lopes around in crazy clumsy circles and has the cutest prancing walk, Tilly zips between points in straight beelines and takes stairs as if they were flat open ground.

Tilly has a magic radar that immediately located every single toy Bailey had lost under our furniture. She whimpered and tried to burrow under every couch or table where she'd located a toy. Her rear end is blurry because that little tail wags nonstop whenever she's on the hunt.

They both still love the window. But Bailey is quite a bit bigger this time around. Compare to this photo from about 6 months ago.

@ 9 and 10 months: Bailey has hip dysplasia

In December, Bailey started standing up against the bench rather than sitting on it. It's a funny human-like pose, especially when he folds his arms.

Here's a clearer view:

Initially, we thought he started this because he was getting too big for the bench (compared to, say, when he was 3.5 months old). But now we realize it must have hurt to jump up on the bench, because...

...Bailey has hip dysplasia. The poor guy was probably hurting the whole time, but he's not much of a complainer, so we had no idea until December. At that time, he began yelping randomly, basically whenever his bones popped out of place. His way of sitting like a frog (back legs kind of turned out) when he was younger and his difficulty with traversing stairs were possible early indicators.

Some info on hip dysplasia:
Basically, Bailey has deformed hip sockets. So his pelvis doesn't join up snugly with the top of his femurs (the uppermost leg bones). Over time, bone spurs and arthritis can develop. The situation is pretty clear when you compare Bailey's x-ray to this x-ray of a healthy dog.

Ironically, hip dyspasia is atypical in mixed breed dogs and in smaller dogs in general. But if Bailey is indeed part-border collie, that might be the source of the defect.

At times, we find it ridiculous how much we'll need to spend on our poor mutt, but he's so young, and we were hoping to have him around for many years. The expected result is a return to pretty much 100% normal function, and in that case, it'll be worth it.

So wish him luck! Next week is the first surgery on one side of the hip, followed by the second surgery three weeks later. Then he'll have a very uncomfortable 2-3 months, but if all goes well, he'll be in good shape just in time for summer!

@ 9.5 months: Bailey in the snow

Bailey says: this snow is serious business.

We think Bailey has perma-puppy features—those short legs and giant front feet seem here to stay.

Bailey enjoys eating snow off of shovels, as well as off of the ground.

@ 8 months: Show me your war face

Looking vicious: Bailey and Jay.

They both love the snow...romping in it, nosing in it, eating it, wrestling in it.

After more than half-an-hour, they still want more.

@ 8 months: Bailey luvs rugs

Bailey luvs rugs, period. This rug comes from my in-laws. He has one just like it at their place. As soon as it arrived, he sniffed it enthusiastically, laid down on it, gave it a bit of a thrashing, and proceeded to make it his favorite spot in the living room.

@ 8 months: Bailey luvs suitcase beds

We were packing for Thanksgiving and an open suitcase got placed in a spot where we usually put Bailey's pet bed. Bailey immediately climbed in and started to get cozy. We laughed, he got confused as to why we were making such a big fuss and got out of the suitcase, but then we put him back in the suitcase, and then we took pictures (yes, these photos are somewhat staged).

We would have liked to bring him, but while sleeping inside a suitcase is probably fun, traveling inside of one probably is not. Instead, he got to stay with my in-laws and he had a grand old time that weekend.

@ 8 months: Bailey luvs his new skull recycled rug

Bailey prefers to lay down on rugs than on our hardwood floors. So at this year's DIY Trunk Show in Chicago's Pulaski Park Auditorium, we bought this lovely rug for Bailey from: Emily Kircher, Recycling Artist. She recycles fabric, china/ceramics, bottlecaps, and other materials into rugs, mosaic works, and bottlecap accessories. You can learn more at her blog, and purchase items at her Etsy storefront. And if you're new to Etsy, learn about it here.

Bailey strikes a GQ pose.
If I were a real photographer, I would have moved the bags of dog food and the Crate and Barrel bag out of the background.

GQ Bailey #2.

We couldn't get a good GQ Bailey pose that also showcased the nice skull, so here is Bailey making a quizzical face. Anyway, Visit Emily's site, and perhaps Bailey may make an appearance there as well.

@ 7 months: Baileys for Obama

Bailey looks toward the future: he can't vote (even in Chicago) but he supports the Obama-Biden ticket. And it's not just because Michelle Obama announced that the family's first dog will be a rescue dog! He likes Obama's policies on government accountability and transparency, foreign affairs, education, public service, healthcare, taxes, government spending, and energy independence.

Bailey luvs the car 2

More photos of Bailey in the car:

Handsome Bailey profile.

Yawning Bailey.

Wheeeee!

Serious Bailey by the car wash.

Happy Bailey by the car wash!

Aerodynamic Bailey.

More happy Bailey.

Bailey says: my favorite movie is Cujo.
Sometimes Bailey just likes to hang out on the floor and make scary faces...

...or happy faces.

I wanted to see what Bailey looks like from outside the car. Pretty cute.

Bailey tries to get out of the car.

@ 6 months: a dapper dog

We're going to switch our post titling to coincide with Bailey's age...so Bailey is approximately 6 months old here. We're not into full costumes for pets, but a bowtie just can't be passed up, especially for a dog who wears a full suit all the time.

Strange sleeping position #08

Finally, we capture the "flying squirrel" sleeping position.

Week 16 - Bailey luvs the car

Bailey LOVES riding in the car. He likes hanging out the window, he likes trying to climb out the window, and he likes going to all the fun places we take him (he doesn't seem to mind the vet, either).

We need to shoot this one again, but here's a blurry photo of Bailey looking super happy. Sometimes we think he tries to bite the wind.
